After earning my undergraduate degree at Imperial, I returned a few years later to pursue a PhD, allowing me to experience student life here from two different perspectives. I’ve learnt that there is no single postgraduate experience: a taught Master’s is usually highly structured, while a research Master’s or PhD involves much more independent planning.

As I finished my last exam at Imperial, concluding my eighteen-month academic journey, I started reflecting on what I’ve learned in my time here, both academically and personally. My year and a half at Imperial has been a transformative experience that has taught me many things, which I’d like to share with you if you’re thinking about studying at Imperial.

1. Choose your course carefully

Coming from an undergraduate degree in Physics, I started at Imperial in a full-time Pure Mathematics Master’s course. While exploring the modules of the course, I found that I was not as interested in purely theoretical subjects as I was for dynamical systems.

I did my undergrad in Civil Engineering at Imperial, and now that I’m in my second year of a PhD in Transport, I’ve had a bit of time to look back on my time here. Honestly, a lot of things about studying at Imperial turned out to be pretty different from what I expected – in a good way!
