For this week, we interviewed Dr. Cynthia Vidal, a postdoctoral researcher and Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellow in the Experimental Solid State Physics group, working in Photonics.
As a little introduction, what area of Physics do you specialize in?
I am an experimentalist in the field of photonics. More precisely, I work on the control of single photon emitters using nanostructures. But I actually started by studying theoretical physics, particle physics and cosmology. After finishing my master in this field, I even started a PhD but, for many different reasons, had to switch subject. So I unexpectedly ended up working on nano-optics!
What kick started your career in Physics?
I’m not sure that anything really kick started my career in Physics. It feels more like a long and slow process where every new step, project, collaboration is an opportunity to learn, develop ideas, grow a contact network with other scientists in different fields. Collaborations are one of my favourite part of being a scientist. It allows to learn and to share ideas at a completely different level. Brainstorming is great when you are a bunch of people chatting around a table (and coffee).
What has your experience being a woman in Physics been like? Both the positives and the negatives.
As far as being a woman in physics goes, there is unfortunately a lot of sexism. It often takes the form of patronizing colleagues or people almost ignoring what you say during meetings. More often than not, I find I have to prove myself more than my male counterparts and clearly show that I actually know what I am talking about. Thankfully, it is not the case in every group or with every masculine colleague! We have great Women In Physics networks everywhere which allows us to meet new physicists, exchange tips, chat, network and have fun!
What do you like to do outside of Physics?
Outside of my job in optics, I like to do… more optics! I really enjoy photography and astronomy: spending hours outdoors and observing the wonders of nature! So it is no surprise that I also love hiking. All this being a bit tough in London, I compensate by going to the cinema or concerts.
