Imperial Policy Forum: Engagement Workshop – 11 Dec 2024

Wednesday 11 December 2024
10:00-13:00, Microsoft Teams – BOOK

In this workshop run by Imperial’s Policy Forum and open to both doctoral students and staff, participants are provided with insights into the UK policymaking process and the benefits to researchers of engaging with this.

You will be introduced to different ways to engage with Parliament and the UK government and become equipped with the tools and confidence to carry out your own policy engagement. This course will show you that you can collaborate and work with policymakers whether you are a doctoral student or a professor, and it is never too soon to start your policy journey!

The first part of this session provides an overview of the policymaking process and identifies who is involved, what they are looking for when engaging with academia, and the benefits of policy engagement for both the policymaker and academics. You will also discover how to identify people in parliament and government who may be interested in your own research.

The second part provides a ‘hands-on’ tutorial of how to inform policy, exploring practical ways to engage with a broad range of policymakers, including government departments and parliamentarians. You will learn about the different avenues to engage with policy, and the most impactful way to approach them. The session will contain a practical workshop on the way in which to write an introductory policy briefing based on your own area of research; focusing on style, language and structure and how it differs from writing for an academic or public audience.

Reflections from former Imperial College Outreach Fellows:

Having been in the role of Imperial College Outreach Fellow at Oundle School for some time now, I can safely say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Through the role, I have not only been able to work with pupils in a classroom setting, but also outside of it in the form of afterschool Science clubs or rocket car workshops. The versatility of the role is probably what I enjoy about it the most. In any day, I’d start off in the classroom but end the day in a school playground, watching mini rocket cars built by the students fire down the race track! Working with such enthusiastic pupils and sharing my passion for STEM with them is such an exhilarating and contagious feeling – one that I must admit, I have become rather addicted to! I am very grateful to be one of the ICLOF’s at the school, and eagerly look forward to upcoming projects this year.

Anudi Bandara, Aeronautical Engineer and Imperial College London Outreach Fellow at Oundle School, 2022-2024

Over the past year I have had the opportunity to teach in many different environments through this role, from Year 3 science lessons in the local primary school right up to extra Chemistry workshops for Upper Sixth pupils from nearby Secondary schools via the STEM Potential scheme in Oundle. It’s been great fun to lead my own after school science clubs as well, where I’ve seen rocket launches, egg drops, boat races and DIY lava lamps to name but a few. Having this freedom and the chance to enhance the education of motivated pupils has been a real highlight of my time so far.
