Director of the School of Convergence Science

Professor Anthony Bull FREng FIMechE MIPEM has accepted appointment as Director of the School of Convergence Science, with effect from 1 June 2026 for a fixed term of three years. 

This new role provides leadership and management for the School of Convergence Science as a flagship initiative of Imperial’s Science for Humanity Strategy. The School operates as a collaborative community, with significant academic independence within the theme areas to establish transformative activities that complement the work of academic departments and faculties and where Imperial’s approach to convergence science adds clear value.

Professor Bull will line manage the School’s theme Co-Directors and chair the School Management Committee and Co-Directors Forum. The role will report to the Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise).

Professor Bull is Professor of Musculoskeletal Mechanics at Imperial College London and a leading researcher in interdisciplinary and translational biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on conflict trauma and the musculoskeletal system. An alumnus of Imperial, he is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, a member of the World Council of Biomechanics, and inaugural Chair of Trustees of the BioMedEng Association. Professor Bull is the immediate past Head of the Department of Bioengineering (2012–2022) and has led or co-led major institutional initiatives across education, research, translation, and infrastructure and philanthropy, including EnVision (education), the Centre for Injury Studies (research), MedTechONE (translation), and the development and delivery of the Sir Michael Uren Hub.

Professor Bull will be focused on leading  the School of Convergence Science but will maintain a research footprint in the Department of Bioengineering.
