Professor Stefan Soldner-Rembold has accepted the appointment as Head of the Department of Physics for a term of five years, with effect from 1 April 2024. To facilitate a smooth transition, Professor Soldner-Rembold will start shadowing the current Head of Department, Professor Michele Dougherty, who has accepted an extension to her term until 31 December 2024.
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, as Head of the Department, Professor Soldner-Rembold will provide strategic vision, direction and leadership to Physics and ensure that appropriate plans, management, and governance processes, are in place to create an outstanding and effective academic environment for staff and students.
Professor Soldner-Rembold, Professor of Particle Physics, is currently Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. Prior to this, he held other senior roles at the university, including Head of the Particle Physics Group. He was Elected Spokesperson of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Collaboration, Fermilab (2018-2022). He was awarded the Max Born Medal and Prize, German Physical Society and UK Institute of Physics (2023); the Chadwick Medal and Prize, Institute of Physics (2018) and a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2013).
Professor Soldner-Rembold became Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2015 and has been a Fellow of the Institute of Physics since 2010.
His research focuses on particle physics, particularly neutrino physics and high energy particle physics.
