Head of the Institute of Clinical Sciences and Director of the Medical Research Council London Institute of Medical Sciences

Professor Wiebke Arlt has accepted appointment as Head of the Institute of Clinical Sciences – one of the departments in Imperial’s Faculty of Medicine – and Clinical Chair in the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Arlt will also be the new Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS). Professor Arlt will take up both posts on 1 January 2023.  

As Director of the MRC LMS, Professor Arlt will be responsible for delivering the LMS vision, providing strategic and scientific leadership to maintain existing and shape future excellence, including through the partnership with Imperial. 

Professor Arlt is currently the Director of the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research and William Withering Chair of Medicine at the University of Birmingham, and Honorary Consultant Physician in the Department of Endocrinology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Professor Arlt has held many other senior roles within the University of Birmingham and she was previously based at University Hospital Würzburg, Germany. 

Professor Arlt’s research focus is in the exploration of the role of steroid synthesis and metabolism in human health and disease. Translational targets of her research span from rare adrenal and gonadal disorders to common conditions associated with steroid excess and increased cardio-metabolic risk such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endocrine hypertension and adrenal incidentaloma.
