Director of Risk Management

We are pleased to welcome Elaine Heyworth as Director of Risk Management with effect from 1 February 2023. In this role, Elaine is responsible for the College Risk Management Framework which supports delivery of the academic mission.

Reporting to the College Secretary and General Counsel, Elaine will lead on assurance and oversight of risk management, crisis management and business continuity. She will advise College leadership on risk management issues and embed best practice risk management principles into College operations. Elaine takes over from Paul Manning who as our Interim Director of Risk Management has been responsible for introducing many improvements and innovations during his time at Imperial.

Reappointment of the Provost 

Professor Ian Walmsley FRS has been reappointed as the Provost of Imperial for a second term of three years, starting 1 September 2023. Professor Walmsley also holds the Chair in Experimental Physics in the Department of Physics.

Reporting to the President, the Provost is the College’s chief academic officer, upholding Imperial’s high academic standards and its core academic mission. As the Provost, Professor Walmsley will continue to hold overall responsibility for the quality of the College’s educational provision and research, with a deep commitment to enhancing our students’ experience and the working environment for staff, championing equality, diversity and inclusion.

Director of Strategic Planning

Anna Shierson has accepted appointment as Director of Strategic Planning with effect from 1 February 2023, for a period of three years. Anna will succeed Dr Malcolm Edwards, who is taking up a part-time role within the Division also with effect from 1 February 2023 and for a period of three years. 

Reporting to the Provost, Anna will lead the Strategic Planning division, which is responsible for supporting the academic mission of the College particularly within the context of expert knowledge of the external funding and policy environment.

Associate Provost (Digital Lifelong Learning)

Leila Guerra has accepted appointment as Associate Provost (Digital Lifelong Learning) with effect from 1 February 2023, for an initial period of 12 months. The appointment will be initially part-time and Leila will continue in her role as Vice-Dean (Education) for the Business School alongside her new responsibilities, overseeing the Business School’s programmes and setting the educational strategy and vision of the portfolio.

In this new role Leila will support the development of a strategy for digitally enhanced lifelong learning. Leila will work with the Interim Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) to identify and develop the College’s strategic options for this area, which may include part-time online interdisciplinary Master’s programmes, continuing professional development courses, micro-credentials and open content.

Head of the Institute of Clinical Sciences and Director of the Medical Research Council London Institute of Medical Sciences

Professor Wiebke Arlt has accepted appointment as Head of the Institute of Clinical Sciences – one of the departments in Imperial’s Faculty of Medicine – and Clinical Chair in the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Arlt will also be the new Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS). Professor Arlt will take up both posts on 1 January 2023.  

As Director of the MRC LMS, Professor Arlt will be responsible for delivering the LMS vision, providing strategic and scientific leadership to maintain existing and shape future excellence, including through the partnership with Imperial.

Managing Director of Imperial College Union

Tom Newman has accepted appointment as Managing Director of Imperial’s students’ union, with effect from 1 October 2022.  

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, via the students’ union president and Chair of the Board, Tom will have overall responsibility for the performance, management, development and sustainability of the union. Working collaboratively with student leaders, he will lead the strategic planning process and take accountability for the delivery of organisational plans that advances the union’s long-term vision to provide the best possible student experience.

Academic Leader for Sustainability

Professor Tim Green has accepted appointment as Academic Leader for Sustainability with effect from 1 November 2022, for an initial period of 5 years. He has initially taken up the role at 0.2 FTE, increasing to 0.5 FTE from 1 January 2023.  

Reporting to the Associate Provost (Estates Planning), in this part-time role Professor Green will be responsible for leading Imperial’s commitment to promoting sustainability across its campuses, engaging with senior leaders across the College to help facilitate appropriate and necessary practical and cultural change. This post combines a champion role for sustainability with responsibility for contributing to the development and embedding of the College’s operational sustainability objectives, as stated in the College’s Sustainability Strategy.
