Director of Strategic Programmes & Change

Karen Foster took up the role of Director of Strategic Programmes & Change on Tuesday 2 May.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, in this role Karen will provide essential leadership to programmes and projects to deliver improvements to systems and processes. Leading the Strategic Programmes & Change Team (formerly known as the Change and Operational Improvement team) and working closely with the Chair of the Operations and Infrastructure Committee and other Professional Services Leaders, she will develop and oversee the delivery of the portfolio of improvement projects that are required to ensure that our Professional Services delivers a world-class support service.

Interim Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI)

Professor Clare Lloyd FMedSci, has accepted the appointment of Interim Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) with effect from 1 June 2023, for an initial period of six months, or until a new Head is identified and appointed. 

Professor Lloyd joined Imperial in 1999 as a Welcome Senior Research Fellow, and was promoted to Professor of Respiratory Immunology in 2006. She was the NHLI’s first Institute Lead for Women from 2008-2014. Professor Lloyd is currently Vice-Dean (Institutional Affairs) for the Faculty of Medicine.

Interim Dean of the Imperial College Business School 

Professor Franklin Allen will take up the role of Interim Dean of the Imperial College Business School, from 1 September 2023, following the departure of Professor Francisco Veloso who will be leaving Imperial at the end of August to take up the position of Dean at INSEAD Business School. Professor Allen will be working closely with Professor Veloso over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition into the role.  

Reporting to the Provost, as the Interim Dean Professor Allen will be a member of the University Management Board. He will be responsible for leading the Business School, including promoting their profile internationally and fostering excellence in research and education.

Vice-Dean (International Activities) for the Faculty of Medicine

Professor Neena Modi has accepted appointment as Vice-Dean (International Activities) for the Faculty of Medicine, for a period of three years from 1 April 2023. 

As a member of the Faculty of Medicine’s senior leadership team, the Vice-Dean (International Activities) reports to and works closely with the Dean. They lead the Faculty’s international partnership activities in research and education, including activities related to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The Vice Dean (International Activities) sits on the Faculty Management Board and plays a key role in identifying and determining Faculty of Medicine strategy, especially on prospective and ongoing international partnerships. Where appropriate, they will deputise for the Dean with regards to these activities.

Associate Dean for Educational Partnerships for the Faculty of Medicine

Dr Emma Keeling has accepted appointment as Associate Dean for Educational Partnerships for the Faculty of Medicine for a period of three years from 1 March 2023.

Reporting to the Vice-Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Medicine, in this role Dr Keeling will be responsible for developing new educational partnerships expanding Imperial’s national and international educational offering outside of West London. Dr Keeling will provide strategic and operational oversight of the Cumbria School of Medicine project up until its formal opening and will be responsible for the ongoing relationship with the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, through the joint Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Senior Consul and Proconsuls

Professor Jonathan Mestel, Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, has been reelected as Senior Consul for a second year, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024.  

Professor Liz Lightstone, Professor of Renal Medicine in the Department of Immunology and Inflammation and Consul (Clinical) for the Faculty of Medicine until 31 August 2023, has been elected as Proconsul for the period 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2026. 

Professor Martin McCall, Professor of Theoretical Optics in the Department of Physics and Consul for the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Education Office until 31 August 2023, has been elected as Proconsul for the period 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2026.

Vice-Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Medicine

Professor Graham Cooke has accepted appointment as Vice-Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Medicine, with effect from 1 March 2023, for a period of three years.

As a member of the Faculty of Medicine’s senior leadership team, the Vice-Dean (Research) works closely with the Dean: sitting on the Faculty Management Board, chairing the Faculty Research Committee, and holding responsibility for communicating and promoting research collaboration internally and externally.

Director of Principal Gifts 

We are pleased to welcome Andrew Paterson who has been appointed as Imperial’s Director of Principal Gifts. Reporting to the Vice-President (Advancement), Andrew will join the senior Advancement team on 27 March 2023. 

The role provides overall coordination of the Principal Gifts Programme – i.e. the pursuit of Imperial’s highest value philanthropic opportunities. Working with Advancement’s faculty-specific and central fundraising teams, the Principal Gifts Team supports all faculties, institutes and networks at Imperial to deliver transformational gifts. 

Andrew has served as the Head of Principal Gifts and Senior Associate Director of Student Support at the University of Cambridge since 2018. While at Cambridge, Andrew played a central role in designing and delivering their successful Student Support Initiative, which raised over £370 million in under four years. Prior to joining Cambridge, Andrew had a long career in private equity-related contexts and management consulting for businesses and organisations, predominantly in the energy sector. He holds an MSci in Fluid Dynamics and an MA in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) from Cambridge.

Consuls 

Professor Wisia Wedzicha, Clinical Chair in Respiratory Medicine in the National Heart and Lung Institute, has been elected to succeed Professor Liz Lightstone as one of the consuls for the Faculty of Medicine for the period 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2026. 

Professor Stephen Curry, Professor of Structural Biology in the Department of Life Sciences, has been elected to succeed Professor Martin McCall as one of the consuls for the Faculty of Natural Sciences and cross-College organisations for the period 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2026. Professor Curry’s term as Associate Provost (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) ends in September 2023.
