“Given my background and experiences, I feel like I have mobility in my blood.”

Lewis Turner is our International Mobility Manager, leading the International Mobility Team (IMT). He joined Imperial in spring 2022.

Advisors on all things international

The International Mobility Team (IMT) advises on ‘all things international’ and include members from HR, Compliance, and Payroll & Pensions.

“The aim is to help our colleagues throughout the university to seize opportunities that they may not previously have considered or thought possible. We support colleagues at all levels to soundboard anything relating to working abroad.

“We identify what colleagues need to benefit from international opportunities, while upholding the university’s duty of care to ensure staff are working in a safe and legally compliant manner anywhere in the world. The team also supports staff working remotely whilst overseas, offering the flexibility needed for them to deliver their best work from wherever that may be.”

Supporting our new Imperial Global hubs

Imperial’s global outlook is key to maintaining its position at the forefront of cutting-edge research. The IMT helps facilitate Imperial’s major research initiatives with partners across the world, including CERN and The George Institute for Global Health. Lewis is helping drive forward Imperial Global, our growing network of hubs in strategic locations, such as Ghana, India, Singapore, and the US.

“Outside of these duties, I am busy in my role as project lead for the ongoing International Mobility Project, designed to improve how staff are supported overseas. We are working very closely with the Business School and the School of Public Health on the pilot phase of the project. We are preparing to roll out new and improved services and support across Imperial in early 2025 – so watch this space.”

The International Mobility project is just one of the projects across Imperial that, as part of our Enabling Roadmap, will provide better services to our staff and students.

An insatiable wanderlust

For his Cultural Studies degree Lewis studied in France and Spain and specialised in translation for professional purposes. Prior to joining Imperial, Lewis worked for an international mobility consultancy.

“I was lucky enough to partner with HR teams in some of the most phenomenal organisations out there. Every client was different and had their own unique challenges. I would regularly travel to meet with clients in France, Spain, the Nordics, and the US.

“I knew that I had found a sector that really interested me. I joined Imperial as I was keen to take on these same challenges but from the other side and be responsible for developing a best-in-class mobility function in-house.

“Given my background and experiences personally and professionally, I feel like I have mobility in my blood.”

Lewis likes to travel in his time off and is planning to visit South America next year, as it’s the last continent he has yet to explore – apart from Antarctica, which he says he’s fine giving a miss! While overseas, Lewis likes to dives into the local culture; he enjoys checking out the food scene, drinking strong coffee, visiting museums, and ticking off world heritage sights from the bucket list.
